Here are some tips from the National Alliance for Youth Sports on how to be a model sports parent...

PARENTS: wrestling is probably the most nerve-wracking sport to watch, when it is your flesh and blood on the mat with an opponent that always looks bigger and stronger.

There is a natural impulse for parents to try to control things to ensure that nothing bad happens to their child. Unfortunately, we cannot control competition and sometimes our emotions get the best of us and we react in ways that would be unimaginable in calmer times.

FROM THE COACHES:

If you are ever confronted by an angry parent or coach who is acting like a fool, DO NOT respond.  You will never get him to see your side of the situation and bystanders will now see two fools instead of one.

Practice sportsmanship, kids learn an awful lot from their parents.

1. Remember that the mat is like your child's classroom--respect the classroom.
2. Make only positive, encouraging comments to the wrestlers on BOTH teams.
3. Discuss your concerns away from the wrestlers and, in particular, away from your child.
4. Respect the officials.
5. Focus on fun and participation rather than winning and losing.
6. Control your emotions.
7. Learn the rules of wrestling.
8. Reinforce the coach's instructions when practicing with your child at home.
9. Remember, positive reinforcement is the key to improvement.
10. Don't undermine team morale.
11. Participate in team activities.
